How to Know If Your Book Idea Is Worth Writing

Updated: Jun 20

(Before You Spend a Single Hour Writing)

You’ve got an idea for a book.

But before you pour your time, energy, and resources into writing it…

Here’s your go-to checklist for evaluating whether your book idea is ready to turn into a manuscript and eventually, a message that reaches the world.

1. Is There a Clear Audience for Your Book?

Every successful book does one of three things: it solves a problem, satisfies a curiosity, or taps into a deep emotional need.

Before you start writing, ask yourself:

  • Who exactly is this book for?

  • What are they struggling with or curious about?

  • Are there books out there solving the same issue?

    Who is your target audience?

Pro tip: Check reviews on Amazon or Goodreads. What are readers loving? What’s missing?

2. What Makes Your Book Different?

The publishing world is crowded and that’s a good thing. It means readers are hungry.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s your unique angle?

  • Are you bringing research, personal experience, humor, a bold opinion?

  • What can readers get from your book that they won’t find elsewhere?

Your differentiation is your superpower.

3. Do You Have a Plan Beyond Writing?

Writing is important but it’s only one part of the process:

  • Book Development (structure, content strategy, ghostwriting if needed)

  • Publishing (ISBNs, editing, self-publishing setup, cover design)

  • Marketing (launch plans, funnels, digital strategy, media)

If you’re only focused on writing and haven’t considered what comes next, that’s OK. That’s what coaching is for.

4. Are You Ready to Invest in Your Book?

Let’s talk budget.

You'll need to budget for:

  • Editing & proofreading

  • Book cover design

  • Formatting for print & digital

  • Publishing tools (ISBNs, distribution platforms)

  • Marketing, launch strategy, and visibility campaigns

A glass of money with a little branch coming out of it

So… Is Your Book Idea Worth Writing?

Here’s the quick checklist:

✔ It solves a real problem or answers a strong curiosity

✔ It speaks to a clear and reachable audience

✔ It brings a unique perspective or voice

✔ It fits into a publishing and marketing plan

✔ It supports a long-term vision or goal
